Happy Monday! Welcome to your weekly English Language Arts email. See below for information about your child’s class. Please note that this email features both information for 6th and 8th grade classes so please make sure to look for your grade level. Please see below for information on your child’s week in ELA Weather reminder: As the weather continues to get colder please remind your child that it is important to dress appropriately to stay warm. If a student decides to wear winter boots and there is not space in their locker I have a spot in my classroom where they can be stored for the day. Also, all winter jackets need to be stored in lockers and not worn to class. Please have your child wear a sweater, fleece, or sweatshirt if they get cold during the day. February Office Hour Update: Office Hours will change in the New Year. I will be available on Mondays after school until 4:00 p.m. If a student takes the late bus home they will be escorted down to Homework Club to continue working until 4:30. We had enough for each student to compose 2-3 original poems using the different hearts. <3 8th Grade Week of February 18, 2019 8th Grade Current Course Objectives: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.8.4 I can figure out the deeper meanings of words and phrases as they are used in a story CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.8.4 I can identify several types of figurative language in a text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.8.4 I can identify how certain word choices influence the meaning and tone of a text. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.8.4 I can identify how the author's analogies or allusions to other texts influence meaning and tone. Monday: No School Tuesday: New Unit Objectives, Set up Interactive Notebooks for Poetry, Figurative Language 1 due Thursday Wednesday: Continue Poem Notes, Analyze “O Captain! My Captain!” Thursday: HW Due, Written analysis of “O Captain” Friday: Poetic Device Quiz Special Note: All research essays are currently being scored. Once I have completed grading I will pass them back and students will have an opportunity to make adjustments before a final grade is entered into powerschool.

LOVE IS IN THE AIR <3 <3 <3 Good Afternoon Tappan Families,
Happy Monday! With Valentine's Day right around the corner it would seem that love is in the air! The love for learning, love of literature, and the love of candy hearts (that one will be explained on Thursday :) ) Tomorrow we celebrate NAAPID--National African American Parent Participation Day and we would like to invite parents into our classrooms for the day. Please joins us for a day of learning, lunch, and a guest speaker on Mindfulness at Tappan. We hope to see many of you throughout the day. I can outline and explain specific claims and supportive evidence in a written argument. Research, Inform, Explain CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.8.2 Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content. I can write an introduction that is clear and previews what is to follow. I can develop a topic that is relevant and supported with facts, definitions, details and quotations. I can use appropriate and different transitions to present clear connections between my ideas and concepts. I can use precise wording and specific vocabulary to teach others about a topic. I can establish and maintain a formal style in presenting written information. I can write a conclusion that follows from and supports the information and explanations I presented. Please do not buy any of these articles at home. We have computer/research time scheduled until next week.
